Perched above La Jolla with outdoor tide pool tanks and a view over the kelp beds. Ages three to ten, and quieter than the big-city aquariums.
Legoland California
In Carlsbad, thirty-five minutes north, and pitched precisely at ages three to ten — the age band the bigger parks tend to miss.
La Jolla Shores
A wide flat beach with lifeguards, gentle surf and a launch point for kayaks to the sea caves. Any age on the sand, eight upwards in a kayak.
June gloom and early dinners
Late spring mornings stay grey until midday, so plan indoor starts. Balboa Park runs a free tram between museums, and restaurants fill with families by five.
