A big alpine lake ringed by campgrounds, free-ish buses and one proper backpacker hostel.
Mellow Mountain Hostel
Dorms and private rooms in South Lake Tahoe, walkable to the gondola and the Nevada state line. The only dedicated hostel on the lake, so it books out in ski season.
What a day costs
Around $60โ120 a day: campsite $25โ40, groceries from the South Lake supermarkets, and a lift ticket that will double it if bought at the window.
Camping around the lake
D.L. Bliss, Emerald Bay and Fallen Leaf campgrounds sit on the west shore and book out by spring; national forest land away from the shoreline allows free dispersed camping.
Buses and winter shuttles
North-shore microtransit is free within its zone, South Lake runs a paid route along Highway 50, and most resorts operate free ski shuttles from town in winter.
Free by day
The three-mile paved East Shore Trail from Incline Village to Sand Harbor, Kiva Beach, and the Truckee River path โ all free to walk, though parking rarely is.
