A walled medieval town on Gotland that triples its prices in July and empties by October.
Norderstrand campsite
Beds inside the wall are dear in summer; the campsite and hostels at Norderstrand, twenty minutes north on foot, are the realistic option. Book early for August.
What a day costs
SEK 600–1,100, roughly $55–105, with the ferry amortised. Camping and self-catering halves it; July accommodation can double it.
Ferry and a bicycle
Destination Gotland sails from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn in about three hours. Island buses are sparse — take a bike across or hire one at the harbour.
Free by day
The 3.4-kilometre ring wall walk, the ruined churches scattered through the old town, the botanical garden and the beach at Norderstrand.
Stora Torget
The main square and the harbour bars are where summer crowds collect; in August the medieval festival turns the whole walled town into one meeting point.
