The plan

Walk the ring wall
3.4km of 13th-century wall, almost complete — the best free hour on the island.
Church ruins
A dozen roofless medieval churches inside the walls; St Karin is the beauty.
Rent a bike for the raukar
Gotland's sea stacks at Langhammars look like a sculpture park nobody built.
Fårö island
Bergman's island, an hour north — free ferry, empty beaches, film-set light.
Medieval Week (August)
The whole town in costume, jousting included. Book a year out, honestly.

Getting there

Fly into
Visby (VBY) from Stockholm in 40 minutes — or the ferry from Nynäshamn (3 hours).
From the airport
Ten minutes to the walls by bus or taxi.
Getting around
Walk inside the walls (cars are restricted in summer); bikes and buses for the island.

When to go

Best time to go
Jun & late Aug (warm, calmer)
Cheapest months
