Fourteen islands, free state museums and a ferry that runs on an ordinary transit ticket.
Södermalm hostels
The hostel belt runs across Söder around Mariatorget and Hornstull, with a few converted ships moored at Skeppsholmen. Cheap food and secondhand shops within walking distance.
What a day costs
SEK 700–1,200 daily, roughly $65–115: dorm 350–550, groceries and a lunch deal 200–350, a 24-hour SL travelcard around 175.
SL travelcards and ferry 80
One SL ticket covers metro, bus, tram and the commuter ferry to Djurgården — the cheapest boat trip in the city. Passes run 24 hours to 30 days.
Free by day
Several state museums charge nothing, including the Museum of Modern Art's collection and the History Museum; the blue-line metro art and Skogskyrkogården are also free.
Mariatorget square
The square is the informal meeting point for Söder's hostels, with walking tours forming nearby and the surrounding bars pricing beer below Östermalm rates.
