Seals, a cable car and a husky yard — Arctic novelty does most of the entertaining here.
Polaria Arctic aquarium
A small Arctic aquarium with bearded seals, a training session most afternoons and a panoramic film. Half an hour to ninety minutes, best for three to ten.
Fjellheisen cable car
Four minutes to Storsteinen, four hundred metres above the strait, with a café and an easy path along the ridge in summer.
Husky and reindeer camps
Farms out on Kvaløya run short sled rides and feeding sessions. Sledding suits four and up; the reindeer feeding works for toddlers too.
Polarmuseet, the polar museum
A creaky wooden warehouse full of trapping gear, stuffed polar bears and expedition kit. Grim in places, gripping for eight-year-olds upwards.
Snow, dark and daylight
Polar night runs late November to mid-January and the midnight sun from late May. Sledges beat pushchairs in snow; thermal suits rent by the day.
