Tromsø

EUROPE · ARCTIC · AURORA CAPITAL
Sixty-nine degrees north: whales in the fjord, lights in the sky, and more bars per head than anywhere in Norway.

The plan

Chase the lights (Sep–Mar)
Go with a chaser who drives to clear sky — that's the whole trick.
Fjellheisen cable car
The city, the islands and the Arctic laid out; the aurora often shows here.
Arctic Cathedral
The white glacier-shaped church across the bridge; concerts most nights.
Whale safari (Nov–Jan)
Orcas and humpbacks follow the herring into the fjords.
Midnight sun kayak (Jun–Jul)
Paddle at 1am in daylight — the north's strangest pleasure.

Getting there

Fly into
Tromsø (TOS) — direct from Oslo, and seasonal from a few European hubs.
From the airport
The Flybussen or a normal city bus reaches the centre in 10–15 minutes.
Getting around
The island centre is walkable; tours pick up from hotels. Rent studded-tyre cars only if confident.
