Hostels and guesthouses sit along Storgata on the island; the campsite and cheaper cabins are across the bridge in Tromsdalen, twenty minutes on foot.

NOK 900–1,400, roughly $85–135: beds run 400–700 and climb hard from November to March, food 250–400. Tours are the real budget killer.

Troms buses cover the island cheaply and the Flybussen meets flights. For aurora chasing, a shared minibus split between travellers beats any private hire.

Telegrafbukta beach, the shoreline path past the Arctic Cathedral and the lake at Prestvannet cost nothing — and the aurora needs only darkness and patience.

The old brewery hall on Storgata opens early and fills with a mixed crowd; hostel common rooms are where aurora car-shares actually get arranged.
