WITH KIDS
Beaches that look tropical and feel Arctic, plus a Viking longhouse where children row the ship.
Red rorbuer cabins below Lofoten peaks
Lofotr Viking Museum
A reconstructed chieftain's longhouse at Borg with fires, mead benches and a ship children help row on the lake. Strong for five to twelve.
Haukland beach
White sand and turquoise shallows with a car park and toilets. The water rarely passes twelve degrees, so wetsuits or short dashes only.
Lofotakvariet, Kabelvåg
A modest aquarium with otters and seals fed on a schedule, plus touch tanks. An hour indoors, which the weather will eventually demand.
Sea eagle safari
Fast boats from Svolvær and Reine into the Trollfjord, with eagles baited close. Ear defenders and flotation suits provided; realistically ages six and up.
Driving the E10
The islands run about 170 kilometres end to end on single carriageway with tunnels and bridges — three hours without stops, twice that with. Book child seats ahead.
