Free museums mean you can leave after forty minutes without guilt, which changes how you plan.
National Air and Space Museum
Rockets, a Wright flyer and a planetarium on the Mall, reopening gallery by gallery; the Udvar-Hazy annex near Dulles holds a space shuttle. Ages five to thirteen.
National Zoo
Free, on a wooded hillside in Woodley Park, with giant pandas back since 2024. Ages two to ten; walk downhill from the top gate, not up.
Natural History Museum
The elephant in the rotunda, a dinosaur hall and a ticketed butterfly pavilion. Ages four to twelve, and the busiest museum on the Mall by mid-morning.
Tidal Basin paddle boats
Pedal boats hire by the hour from spring to autumn, under the cherry trees that bloom in late March or early April. Ages four upwards.
Museum fatigue and logistics
Two museums a day is the ceiling for most children. Metro lifts are reliable, family restrooms are common, and the Mall itself has almost no shade.
