Cades Cove loop
Eleven miles of one-way road through a historic valley — black bears, deer, log churches. On summer Wednesdays it closes to cars, which makes it a family bike ride.
Mountain Farm Museum
A collection of relocated 1900s farm buildings beside the Oconaluftee visitor centre, with elk grazing the field at dusk in autumn. Flat, short, free.
Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies
In central Gatlinburg, with a moving walkway through a shark tunnel and penguins. Expensive and busy, but it saves a wet day; ages two and up.
Junior Ranger at Sugarlands
Booklets and a small backpack of activities from the Sugarlands visitor centre, plus ranger programmes across the summer. Ages five to twelve.
Fireflies, humidity and creeks
Synchronous fireflies at Elkmont draw an early-summer lottery for vehicle passes. Summer is humid and stormy; never let children swim above a waterfall.
