The surviving squares of Oglethorpe's 1733 town plan, each a small shaded park with monuments and old houses around it, running south to Forsyth Park and its fountain. Free, and the best use of a morning: walk up from Bay Street and zig-zag between them.

Three sites on one ticket and all within a few minutes' walk: the Telfair Academy, the contemporary Jepson Center with its children's art museum, and the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters, open 10:00 to 17:00. The Owens-Thomas tour is the one that deals directly with the people enslaved in the house.

Riverside burial ground at 330 Bonaventure Road, about fifteen minutes east of downtown, gates open 08:00 to 17:00 daily and free to enter. The Bonaventure Historical Society staffs a visitors centre at weekends and runs free guided tours on the second weekend of each month, one of them at 13:00.

7601 Skidaway Road, about twenty minutes south of downtown: an avenue of live oaks hung with Spanish moss leading to the tabby ruin of Noble Jones's house, one of the oldest standing structures in Savannah, plus a museum and marsh trails. Open daily 09:00 to 16:45; $12 adults, $9 over-62s, $5.75 for ages 6 to 17.

Georgia's oldest and tallest lighthouse, at 30 Meddin Drive on Tybee Island roughly thirty minutes east of the city. Open 09:00 to 16:30 with the lighthouse closing at 17:00, shut Tuesdays; $14 adults and $12 for seniors and ages 6 to 17, covering both the light station and the Tybee Museum.
