Open-air courtyard and the blocks around it just west of Ellis Square, full of bars, restaurants, galleries and upstairs artist studios on a market site dating back to 1755. There is live music in the courtyard on many evenings; it is the busiest spot after River Street.

Cobbled riverfront below the bluff, lined with bars and restaurants in old cotton warehouses, with Rousakis Plaza and Morrell Park used for concerts and festivals run by the Savannah Waterfront Association. Steep stairs and ramps lead down from Bay Street, and the cobbles are punishing in anything but flat shoes.

The two downtown streets where residents drink: small bars, dive bars and late kitchens within a couple of blocks of each other, a short walk up from City Market. Cheaper than the riverfront and open later.

Veteran-owned brewery and taproom at 574 Indian Street, west of the tourist blocks: Wednesday and Thursday 16:00 to 21:00, Friday and Saturday 12:00 to 22:00, Sunday 12:30 to 18:00, closed Monday and Tuesday. A share of taproom takings goes to veterans' charities.

Restored theatre at 32 Abercorn Street, run by SCAD, with an evening programme of classic film screenings, Wurlitzer pipe organ nights and one-off performances. Tickets go through the SCAD box office.
