Ten colour-coded rooms filling a whole city block in the Pearl District, with over a million new, used and out-of-print books shelved together so both turn up on the same shelf. Open daily 10am–9pm; the Rare Book Room, which holds signed first editions, closes at 5pm.

611 SW Kingston Avenue in Washington Park, up the hill above the rose garden. Adult admission $22.50 with free guided tours included, plus cultural demonstrations through the year. Hours vary by day of the week, so check before you make the climb.

239 NW Everett Street, at 3rd and Everett in Old Town Chinatown — a walled Suzhou-style garden dropped into a city block. Open daily 10am–5:30pm with last entry 5pm; $18 adults, $17 seniors and students, $15 for ages 6–18, under-5s free. The Yun Shui Teahouse inside runs tea tastings on Fridays and Sundays from September to November.

400 SW Kingston Avenue in Washington Park: more than 10,000 rose bushes across over 610 varieties, free to enter, open 5am–10pm but closed 5–10am every other Wednesday from May to August. Blooms run late May into October, and there are free 1pm tours daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Parking in Washington Park is paid.

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry at 1945 SE Water Ave, on the east bank of the Willamette. General admission covers the exhibit halls; the USS Blueback submarine tour and the Kendall Planetarium shows are ticketed on top and run at fixed times, so book those slots as you arrive.
