Park City

A silver-mining town 35 minutes from an international airport, with the largest ski resort in the United States on one side of it and Deer Valley on the other. That airport proximity is the whole pitch: land at Salt Lake at nine, ski by noon. Main Street's 19th-century storefronts are still there, and in January the whole town turns into Sundance.

Deer Valley
No snowboards, groomed to a fault, and the best on-mountain food in America. Skiers only, unapologetically.
Main Street
Nineteenth-century mining storefronts full of bars and galleries, with a free town lift up from the base.
Utah Olympic Park
Bobsleigh rides down the 2002 track and ski jumpers training over a pool in summer.
Sundance Film Festival
Late January, and the town doubles in size. Tickets and rooms go on sale months ahead.

Getting there
Fly Salt Lake City (SLC)
Thirty-five minutes by road, a Delta hub with direct flights from Europe. The easiest big ski access in North America.
Airport shuttles
Several door-to-door services run continuously to Park City hotels for around $50 — no car needed if you're only skiing.
Getting around
Park City's free bus network covers both resorts, Main Street and most lodging every 15–20 minutes.
When to go
Best time to go
Late January to early March for the deepest snow, or September for the aspens and empty trails.
Cheapest months
April to May and October to November — mud season, when rooms are a third of winter rates.
Priciest & busiest
Sundance week in late January and Christmas to New Year, when Park City is the most expensive town in Utah.
