Old Faithful Geyser of California
A private geyser north of Calistoga that erupts every half hour or so, with fainting goats and llamas in a paddock beside it. Half an hour for ages three to nine.
Safari West
A wildlife preserve over the hill toward Santa Rosa, toured in open jeeps past giraffes and rhinos. Three hours, a proper outing, and a minimum age of four.
Connolly Ranch
A small working education farm in Napa with goats, chickens and a garden, running camps and drop-in sessions. Aimed squarely at under-eights.
Bale Grist Mill
A restored water-powered flour mill that still turns on demonstration days, with a shaded trail through to the Bothe campground. Short, cheap and oddly gripping.
Picnic wineries and midday heat
Most tasting rooms are twenty-one and over. Aim for the handful with lawns and delis; and note the valley floor passes 95°F from July to September.
