Ho'okipa and Peahi
Ho'okipa is a windsurfing and kitesurfing arena with reliable trade winds from spring to autumn. Peahi, a few miles east, breaks big in winter and draws tow crews.
Outrigger canoe racing
Club regattas run through the summer months off Kahului and the west side, with long-distance channel races in early autumn. Free to watch from the beach.
Cycle to the Sun
A summer hill climb from sea level to the Haleakalā summit — roughly 36 miles and 10,000 feet of ascent in one continuous climb, with no descent categories.
Maui Invitational basketball
A pre-season college basketball tournament held on the island in November, packing top programmes into a small gym. Tickets are scarce and go early.
