Kauai Marathon and Half
Run in early autumn from Poipu into the hills behind Koloa, hilly and humid, with village crowds along the route. Entries cap well before race weekend.
Outrigger canoe regattas
Summer regatta season fills Kalapaki and Hanalei bays with six-person canoes and whole families on the beach. Watching costs nothing and lasts all day.
Learning to surf
Beginner schools work the gentle shorebreak at Poipu, Kalapaki and Hanalei in summer. Hanalei Bay in winter is a different sport entirely — watch, do not paddle out.
Poipu Bay golf
A clifftop resort course on the south shore that hosted a season-ending professional tournament for over a decade. Green fees are steep; twilight rates less so.
