A wildlife refuge on the northern headland with nesting albatross and red-footed boobies, and whales offshore in winter. Reservations required; short and paved.

A 45-minute climb from the coast to a series of paved viewpoints over a red gorge. Puu Hinahina and the main lookout need only a few steps from the car.

North-shore surf turns lethal from October to April, and lifeguards are few. Rain also concentrates in those months; the south and west stay dry and calm.
