A park of climbable boulders and quarter-mile trails, best treated as an autumn-to-spring destination.
Hidden Valley Nature Trail
A one-mile loop into a rock-walled bowl, with sanctioned scrambling on every side and interpretive signs. An hour well spent from about age four.
Barker Dam loop
About 1.3 miles, flat, past a cattle rancher's dam and a panel of petroglyphs. Water appears after rain and bighorn sheep occasionally come down to it.
Cholla Cactus Garden
A quarter-mile boardwalk through a dense stand of teddybear cholla, glowing at low sun. Keep children on the planks โ the segments detach into skin at a brush.
Junior Ranger and stargazing
Booklets from the Oasis or Joshua Tree visitor centres, and a small volunteer observatory near the north entrance that runs public star parties on clear nights.
Heat, water and cold nights
From June to September the park runs 100โ110ยฐF and is genuinely dangerous. Visit October to April, carry a gallon per person, and pack layers for the nights.
