Free eight-night event on the South Rim, 6–13 June in 2026, with amateur astronomers' telescopes set up outside the visitor center, a speaker on the plaza at 8pm and ranger constellation tours at 9, 9:30 and 10pm. Viewing is best after 9pm and you pay nothing beyond the normal park entrance fee. There is no North Rim star party in 2026 because of the Dragon Bravo Fire.

The lounge at the 1905 El Tovar, with a small terrace over the rim, is the nearest thing to a proper bar on the South Rim; Bright Angel Lodge has a second, noisier room a few minutes' walk away. Both are run by Xanterra and both stop serving early by city standards, so do not plan a late one.

Delaware North's bar beside Yavapai Lodge at Market Plaza, about a mile east of the historic village, with a large patio and pub food; usually the easiest place to get a table without booking. The Village (Blue) shuttle stops at Market Plaza year round.

Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from 1 March to 30 November, so the free Hermits Rest (Red) shuttle is how you reach Hopi and Mohave Points for the last light; it runs until an hour after sunset. The queue for the return bus is long immediately after sundown — walking back one viewpoint along the Rim Trail usually gets you a seat faster.

The gateway town of Tusayan, seven miles south of the entrance, is a strip of hotel bars and a cinema and little else. The seasonal Tusayan (Purple) shuttle links it to the visitor center every 45 minutes from 8am to 9pm, but only between 23 May and 11 September; outside that you need a car. Carry a red-filtered torch — white light wrecks everyone's night vision on the rim.
