Big Sur International Marathon
Run each spring on a closed Highway 1 from Big Sur to Carmel, with a grand piano playing at the Bixby Bridge halfway. Entry is by lottery and sells out.
Laguna Seca racing
The circuit above Monterey runs sports cars and motorcycles through the season, with a historic-car meeting in August. The Corkscrew corner is the reason people come.
Pebble Beach golf
A professional pro-am takes over the Monterey Peninsula's courses each February, cliff-edge holes and weather included. Practice-round tickets are the affordable entry.
Kayaking Elkhorn Slough
Guided paddles from Moss Landing, north of Monterey, go among sea otters and hauled-out sea lions year-round. Calmer and cheaper than any open-coast option.
