SIESTA TO FIESTA

Punta del Este

SOUTH AMERICA ยท FIESTA SIDE
South America's St-Tropez: towers, yachts, a giant hand rising from the sand and January prices to match. Out of season it empties almost completely.

The plan

La Mano (Los Dedos)
Mario Irarrazabal's fingers rising out of Playa Brava at Parada 1, carved in six days in 1982 and now the town's emblem. Free, always there.
Casapueblo, Punta Ballena
Paez Vilaro's whitewashed cliff sculpture-house. The museum-workshop opens daily year-round, 10am to sunset. Stay for the sun ceremony.
Isla de Lobos boat trip
Two hours out from the port to a sea lion colony tens of thousands strong. Operators run all year because the lobos never leave.

Playa Mansa vs Playa Brava
The peninsula splits calm river water from open Atlantic. Mansa for swimming and sunsets, Brava for waves, surf and the hand.
Museo Ralli
Free Latin American contemporary art in Beverly Hills. Seasonal: evenings Jan-Feb, afternoons Dec and Mar, weekends Oct-Nov and Apr-May.

Getting there

Fly into Punta del Este (PDP)
Laguna del Sauce airport, 20km west. Year-round from Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo; most other routes run summer only. Tiny terminal.
Bus from Montevideo
COT and others run frequently from Tres Cruces, about two hours down the Interbalnearia. Cheap, comfortable and the easiest option.
Drive from Montevideo
140km on the Ruta Interbalnearia, roughly 1h45. A car earns its keep here for La Barra, Jose Ignacio and Punta Ballena.

When to go

Best time to go
Dec-Feb for full summer; late Nov and March give you beaches without the crush
Cheapest months
June-September. Cold, and much of the town is shuttered, but genuinely cheap
Priciest & busiest
Christmas to mid-January, when Argentine and Brazilian money lands all at once

If you've got one day

Morning
Walk the peninsula from the port round to Playa Brava and La Mano, then back along the Mansa rambla past the yacht marina.
Late morning
Head 12km west to Punta Ballena for Casapueblo and a wander through the free Arboretum Lussich woods on the ridge.
Lunch
Lo de Tere on the port rambla or El Palenque on Roosevelt โ€” both long-running, both do fish and grill properly.
Afternoon
Boat out from the port to Isla de Lobos for the sea lion colony, about two hours there and back.
Evening
Sunset drinks on the Mansa side, dinner out in La Barra, then a late one at Moby Dick on the rambla.

Nearby & day trips

La Barra and Manantiales
Ten minutes east over the wave-shaped bridges: surf beaches, boutiques and the summer club strip. Half of it shuts by March.
Arboretum Lussich
Free 190-hectare exotic tree collection on the Punta Ballena ridge, with walking trails and views over both coasts.
