Ciudad Vieja on foot
The old town from Plaza Independencia to the port: Palacio Salvo, colonnaded banks, street art and the 1804 cathedral. A morning's walk.
Mercado del Puerto
An 1868 iron-framed market now wall-to-wall grills. Take a counter stool, order asado or a chivito, drink the local medio y medio.

Teatro Solis
Uruguay's 1856 opera house. Guided tours run most afternoons; foreigners pay 400 pesos and Wednesdays are free. Check the night's bill too.

The 1972 Andes crash told through real wreckage and survivors' belongings. Sober and gripping. Mon-Fri 10-17, Sat 10-15, closed Sunday.

The Rambla at sunset
22km of waterfront from Ciudad Vieja out to Carrasco. Locals walk it with a thermos and a mate gourd. Pocitos is the best stretch.
Getting there
Fly into Carrasco (MVD)
Uruguay's main airport, 19km east of the centre. Direct from Madrid, Miami, Panama City, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires. Bus or taxi in.
Ferry from Buenos Aires
Buquebus runs direct fast ferries across the Plata, or take the shorter Colonia crossing plus a bus. Immigration is done once, at the port.
Bus into Tres Cruces
Every long-distance bus in Uruguay funnels through Tres Cruces terminal, 15 minutes from Ciudad Vieja. Buy at the counters or online.

Nov-Mar. Southern hemisphere, so Dec-Feb is high summer and carnival season
Cheapest months
May-Aug. Cold, grey and wet, but hotels are cheap and the city is all locals
Priciest & busiest
January and carnival in February, when the Argentines arrive and rates jump

Morning
Start in Plaza Independencia under Palacio Salvo, then walk Sarandi through Ciudad Vieja to Plaza Matriz and the cathedral.
Late morning
Museo Andes 1972 on Rincon — an hour with the survivors' own account of the 1972 crash and its aftermath.
Lunch
Mercado del Puerto. Take a stool at a parrilla counter, order the mixed grill or a chivito, and try a medio y medio.
Afternoon
Out to Parque Batlle for the Estadio Centenario and its football museum, home of the very first World Cup final in 1930.
Evening
Walk the Pocitos rambla as the light goes, then dinner and a tango set at Baar Fun Fun back in Ciudad Vieja.
Nearby & day trips
Bodega Bouza
Boutique winery 20 minutes out in Canelones. Tannat and albarino tastings plus a restaurant among the vines. Book ahead, not a walk-in.
Colonia del Sacramento
Two and a half hours west by bus on Ruta 1 for UNESCO cobbles and sunsets over the river. Doable as a long day trip.
