Barrio Historico
The UNESCO old town, where the irregular Portuguese street plan collides with the Spanish grid. Small enough to cover in an afternoon.
Faro de Colonia
An 1857 lighthouse on a ruined Franciscan convent, 26m up for the whole peninsula. Thu-Sun 10-12 and 15-17, 35 pesos, closed shoes and ID.

Calle de los Suspiros
The most photographed street in Uruguay: uneven river-stone cobbles falling away to the water. Best at dawn, before the ferries land.
Porton de Campo
The reconstructed 1745 city gate and its wooden drawbridge over the old moat — the proper way into the historic quarter.
The municipal museums
Ten-odd tiny museums in the old town — Portuguese, Spanish, tile, Nacarello house — covered by one municipal ticket. Most are one room each.

Getting there
Ferry from Buenos Aires
Buquebus and Colonia Express run around 34 crossings a week, roughly 1h15 each way. The terminal is five minutes' walk from the old town.
Bus from Montevideo
About 2h30 west on Ruta 1 from Tres Cruces, with several departures a day. The bus terminal sits right beside the ferry port.
Drive from Montevideo
180km on Ruta 1, roughly two hours. Park outside the Barrio Historico — the cobbles are punishing and largely pedestrianised.

Best time to go
Oct-April. Long evenings, warm river light and everything actually open
Cheapest months
June-August. Cold and quiet, but hotels drop and the cobbles are yours
Priciest & busiest
January, plus any Argentine long weekend, when day trippers flood in
If you've got one day
Morning
Come in through the Porton de Campo, then wander Calle de los Suspiros and the Plaza Mayor before the first ferry crowd arrives.
Late morning
Climb the Faro for the view over the peninsula, then pick two or three of the one-room municipal museums.
Lunch
Charco Bistro or Bohemia, both looking straight out over the Rio de la Plata from the old town's river edge.
Afternoon
Hire a bike or golf buggy out to Real de San Carlos for the restored 1910 bullring and the ruins around it.
Evening
Sunset from the rocks below the lighthouse — Colonia faces west — then a long dinner back in the Barrio Historico.
Nearby & day trips
Real de San Carlos
5km north: a 1910 Argentine resort complex that failed. The bullring was restored in 2021 as a cultural venue; the rest is atmospheric ruin.
Carmelo
An hour northwest, Uruguay's quiet wine country on the Plata delta — tannat bodegas, a rotating bridge and almost no other tourists.
