Cabo Polonio

No mains electricity, no road in, no ATM. A cluster of shacks under a lighthouse on a dune peninsula, reached only by 4x4 truck across the sand.

The lighthouse
An 1881 tower, 132 steps, open Thu-Sun 10-13 and 14-17 for 35 pesos. Under-8s cannot climb. It is the only building on mains power.

Sea lion colony
One of South America's largest, on the rocks directly below the lighthouse. Free, year-round, and you hear it before you see it.
Playa Sur and Playa Calavera
Sur is the wide, calmer side where most posadas are. Calavera takes the Atlantic swell and the fishing boats. Ten minutes apart on foot.
Cerro de la Buena Vista
The vast dune between here and Valizas. Climb it for the coast view; sandboards rent near the stream crossing on the Valizas side.
The night sky
With no grid lighting, dark here means dark. Bring a head torch — the sand paths between houses are unlit and easy to lose.
Getting there
4x4 truck from Puerta del Polonio
The only vehicle access. Official trucks leave the terminal at Ruta 10 km 264.5 through the day, about 470 pesos return, 20 min over dunes.
Bus from Montevideo
Coaches from Tres Cruces run about four hours up Ruta 9 and drop at the Cabo Polonio terminal. Then you still take the truck in.
Walk in from Barra de Valizas
Around 7km over the dunes and Cerro de la Buena Vista, with a small boat across the Valizas stream. Three hours, no shade, carry water.

December to February — the only stretch when the village is properly awake
Cheapest months
March-November. Cheap, empty and moody, but most businesses are shut
Priciest & busiest
January, when day trippers and the summer crowd fill every posada
If you've got one day
Morning
Take an early truck from Puerta del Polonio at Ruta 10 km 264.5 — 20 minutes across dunes and beach into the village.
Late morning
Climb the lighthouse if it is Thursday to Sunday, then watch the sea lion colony working the rocks below it.
Lunch
La Perla del Cabo or one of the handful of village kitchens. Bring cash and expect a short menu outside high summer.
Afternoon
Walk round to Playa Calavera, then out over the sand toward Cerro de la Buena Vista and back.
Evening
Stay the night if you can: candles, a bonfire and no streetlights. Otherwise catch the last truck out, around 18:00.

Barra de Valizas
The next village north, with enormous dunes and a stream mouth. Linked to Cabo Polonio by the 7km dune walk and a small boat.
Laguna de Rocha
Protected lagoon and bird reserve down the coast, with flamingos, black-necked swans and a tiny artisanal fishing community.
