Where York goes after dark — bars, live music and the late ones worth staying up for.
Micklegate and Fossgate
The two ends of a York night out: Micklegate is louder and younger, Fossgate has the better food and quieter bars.
Old pubs
York has an unusual density of genuinely old pubs down the snickelways, several claiming to be haunted, most with very low ceilings.
Ghost walks
Several run nightly from the Minster and Shambles area, most of them turn-up-and-pay, most of them starting between seven and eight.
The walls after dark
The walls close at dusk, so this is a walk around the outside of them rather than along the top. The Minster floodlit from Deangate is the shot.
York Racecourse
Eighteen days of flat racing a year on the Knavesmire south of the walls, with the Sky Bet Ebor Festival as the big one. The city fills completely on race days.
