Britain's largest cathedral, on St James's Mount at the top of Hope Street. Thirty minutes on foot from Lime Street, and the scale only registers once you are inside it.

England's largest Catholic cathedral, Grade I listed, on Mount Pleasant at the other end of Hope Street: a circular concrete crown over the altar, with Lutyens' vast unfinished crypt underneath.

The Museum of Liverpool, the Walker Art Gallery, World Museum and the Maritime Museum are all run as one free group across the city centre and the docks.

Both are real places in the southern suburbs rather than set pieces, reachable by bus. Strawberry Field has a visitor centre in the grounds.

Two hundred acres of Victorian park south of the centre with a restored glass palm house in the middle, free and used by locals rather than visitors.
