WITH KIDS
Elephants without riding, waterfalls you can climb, and a mountain temple reached by 300 steps.
Golden chedi of a Chiang Mai temple
Elephant Nature Park
A rescue sanctuary in the Mae Taeng valley with no riding and no bullhooks; day visits include feeding and river walking. Ages 5+.
Chiang Mai Night Safari
Open-air tram loops past deer and rhino after dusk, plus a walking zone and animal show. Cooler than a daytime zoo. Ages 3+.
Bua Thong sticky waterfalls
Limestone falls north of the city with enough grip to walk straight up the cascade. Free entry, shaded picnic ground. Ages 6+.
Doi Suthep temple
A songthaew from Chang Phueak gate climbs the mountain; a naga staircase of about 300 steps, or a small funicular, reaches the terrace. Ages 6+.
Burning season and heat
Air quality collapses from late February into April when the fields are burnt โ€” plan indoor days. November to January is cool and clear.
