The main event after dark. Lanterns burn from dusk to roughly 21:00 and the crowds thin sharply once the last coaches go.

Tea houses along Shuqi serve into the evening. A pot of high-mountain oolong is refilled with hot water as long as you sit.

Most stalls shut by 19:00, but sweet shops and a few noodle counters stay open and you finally have room to walk.

Half an hour away and open late. Temple-front market known for crab thick soup, nutritious sandwiches and bubble ice.

Jiufen empties by 20:00. A guesthouse balcony under Keelung Mountain, harbour lights below, is the real nightlife here.
