THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Lucerne, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
The Kapellbrucke and its octagonal Water Tower
Lion Monument
Thorvaldsen's dying lion cut into a rock face for the Swiss Guards killed in Paris in 1792. Mark Twain thought it the most moving piece of stone in the world. Free, five minutes from the centre.
Glacier Garden
Potholes ground out of the rock by an Ice Age glacier, plus a mirror maze and a viewing tower, immediately next door to the Lion Monument.
Rosengart Collection
Picasso and Klee in quantity, assembled by a dealer family who knew both men. Small, quiet and two minutes from the station.
Boat to Flüelen
The full length of the lake, about three hours each way, through the Urnersee to the Ruetli meadow and the Swiss Path. Come back by train in an hour.
Stanserhorn
Train to Stans, funicular, then the CabriO cable car with an open upper deck. Another summit the Swiss Travel Pass covers in full rather than at half price.
