Stora Torget 1, a restaurant and nightclub in cellars dating from the 12th to the 16th century, with roof terraces, several dance floors and a vinyl and schlager bar. Sun–Thu 17:00–02:00 and Fri–Sat 17:00–03:00; free entry before 23:00 on Friday and Saturday, 18-plus at weekends. It runs all year, which most of the competition does not.

Lilla Torggränd 3, the island's biggest club — around 900 square metres, four dance floors and a roof terrace — but strictly a summer operation, with Friday and Saturday nights running into late August. 18-plus before 23:30, 20-plus after.

The main square inside the walls is where the outdoor tables are, and in June and July people are on them from mid-afternoon because it barely gets dark. Everything else worth walking to is within a few hundred metres.

For one week in early July the town fills with politicians, lobbyists and journalists for Almedalen Week. Beds and restaurant tables are booked out months ahead and prices rise, so go deliberately or avoid that week entirely.

From roughly October to April a large share of the inner-town places shut or drop to weekends only, and Sunday to Wednesday nights are quiet even in the shoulder months. If you are coming in winter, check that anything you are counting on is open before you sail.
