THINGS TO DO
Åre works twice a year — as Scandinavia's largest ski resort in winter and as a lift-served bike and hiking base in summer — with a few genuinely empty weeks in between.

Skiing the three Åre areas
47 lifts and 91 slopes with an 890 m vertical, split between Åre By for steeper and more urban skiing, Åre Björnen for families and beginners, and Duved/Tegefjäll for wide carving runs, plus over 100 km of cross-country trails. Snowfall averages around 420 cm a season, and easyJet flies Gatwick to Åre Östersund in winter.
Åre Bike Park
One of Europe's busiest downhill destinations in summer, lift-served from the village, with trail riding as well as pure downhill and rentals and lessons on site. Access is bundled into the ÅrePasset, which also covers the high-ropes course and other summer activities.
Hiking Åreskutan
The Kabinbanan cable car runs in summer too and puts you high on Åreskutan without the climb, with roughly 475 km of marked trails fanning out from the area. Weather on the summit changes fast even in July, so take a shell and check the forecast at the lift.
Tännforsen
The big waterfall west of the village, with the nearest viewpoint 200 m from the car park and a one-kilometre flower trail around it. Parking and facilities cost 40 kr for two hours; the shop and café run daily 10:30–17:00 from 22 June to about 30 August, then Thursday to Sunday 11:00–17:00 into late September. The official site is tannforsen.se — the .com address is dead.
Fröå Gruva
An old copper mine above the village, now a cultural reserve with a small museum, a shop and Restaurant Bergstugan. The information point at Fyrkanten opens 10:30–15:30 on open days with guided tours at 11:30 and 14:00, and thin bread is baked on Saturdays. Motor vehicles, cycling off the paths and camping are not allowed in the reserve.
