Dambulla Royal Cave Temple
Five caves under an overhang with 150-odd Buddhas and painted ceilings. Rs 3,000, shoes off, knees covered, many steps.

Pidurangala Rock at sunrise
The cheap, scrambly rock opposite, and the only place you see Sigiriya itself. Rs 1,000. Take a torch for a 5.30am start.

Minneriya or Kaudulla safari
Wild elephants gather on the reservoir grasslands roughly Jul-Oct. About US$25 entry. Ask which park the herds are in.

Getting there
Drive from Colombo
About 4 hours via Dambulla. Almost everyone arrives by private car or tourist shuttle; there is no railway station here.
From Kandy
Roughly 2.5-3 hours north. Buses run to Dambulla, then a local bus or tuk-tuk covers the last 20km to Sigiriya.
Pick your base
Sigiriya village is closest to the rock, Dambulla has more buses and cheaper rooms, and Habarana is the safari hub.
When to go
Best time to go
Jan-Mar is coolest and dry. This is the dry zone; the southwest monsoon barely lands.
Cheapest months
Oct-Dec, when the northeast monsoon brings the area its real rain.
Priciest & busiest
Dec-Feb, plus Jul-Sep when the Minneriya elephant gathering peaks.
If you've got one day
Morning
Torch on, up Pidurangala for sunrise. An hour of scrambling for the one view that includes Sigiriya itself.
Late morning
Breakfast, then climb Sigiriya proper: water gardens, the mirror wall, the frescoes and the summit palace.
Lunch
Rice and curry at a village guesthouse, then wait out the worst of the afternoon heat somewhere shaded.
Afternoon
Drive to Dambulla for the cave temples, cooler and quieter late on, with better light on the murals.
Evening
Sundowner at Heritance Kandalama's infinity pool terrace, looking across the tank towards Sigiriya.

Ritigala forest monastery
Ruined first-century hermitage on a jungle mountain, reached by stone stairways. Almost empty next to the big sites.
Anuradhapura
The older, vaster capital 1.5 hrs northwest, with the Sri Maha Bodhi tree and stupas the size of small hills.
