Season runs roughly Nov-Apr and boats leave about 6.30am. Choose an operator that keeps 100m off and never chases.

Coconut Tree Hill
The palm-covered headland east of the beach. Free, absurdly photographed, and genuinely lovely at first light.

Parrot Rock at sunrise
A small rock outcrop off the beach with steps to the top. Reachable on foot at low tide and empty before 7am.

Learn to surf at Weligama
The next bay along is a long sandy beginner break with a dozen schools. Best in the morning before the wind gets up.

Secret Beach
A 20-minute walk west over the headland to a small cove with a couple of bars. Not secret, still quieter.

Getting there
Train to Weligama or Matara
The coast line runs normally. Weligama is 10 min from Mirissa by tuk-tuk; Matara, the end of the line, is 20 min east.
Road from Colombo
About 2.5-3 hrs on the E01 Southern Expressway, or 30-40 min from Galle along the coast road.
Down from the hills
Ella to Mirissa is 3.5-4 hrs by car via Wellawaya. Shared shuttles run the route daily in season.

Best time to go
Nov-Apr. The southwest monsoon churns this coast May-Sep and boats often stay in.
Cheapest months
May-Sep low season, when the sea is rough and half the beach bars close.
Priciest & busiest
Dec-Feb, peak whale season and peak sunshine, when room rates double.
If you've got one day
Morning
Boat out of Mirissa harbour at 6.30am for blue whales, back by late morning. Take seasickness tablets beforehand.
Late morning
Sleep it off on the sand, or walk up Coconut Tree Hill while the light is still worth something.
Lunch
Roti and a mango lassi at Dewmini Roti Shop, or grilled fish at one of the shacks on the beach.
Afternoon
Tuk-tuk to Weligama for a surf lesson on the beginner break, or over the hill to Secret Beach.
Evening
Sunset from Parrot Rock, then a seafood grill on the sand and drinks along the main beach strip.
Nearby & day trips
Weligama and Ahangama
The surf coast, 10-25 min either side, with better breaks, better coffee and a longer-staying crowd.
Matara and Polhena
20 min east: a working town, a Dutch star fort, and a reef lagoon at Polhena where green turtles feed.
