Nightly 5pm hour of Kandyan drumming, mask dance and barefoot fire walking. The town's most reliable evening out.

Long-running lounge on the hill with lake and temple views, a wide menu and the closest thing Kandy has to a late bar.

Small heritage cafe in the old town doing good coffee, pasta and biryani. Calm, and open into the evening.

The 6.30pm thevava is the atmospheric one: drums, oil lamps and a queue of white-clad pilgrims. Free with entry.

Kandy shuts early. For a proper drink with a view, the hillside hotels around Amaya Hills are the fallback.
