The 1684 Dutch officers' quarters, now Aman's fort hotel. Non-guests can usually sit for tea or a drink; call first.

Most fort restaurants are small, candle-lit and set in old villa courtyards. Book in high season; they seat about 30.

Free, crowded, and the best thing the fort does at dusk. Vendors sell arrack and ginger in plastic cups nearby.

A handful of fort hotels open small rooftop terraces to walk-ins at sunset. Wander Lighthouse Street and look up.

For anything past midnight you leave the fort. Unawatuna, 15 min east, has the beach bars and the volume.
