Get lost in the fort lanes
Pedlar, Church and Leyn Baan streets: villa courtyards, gem shops, bookshops and cafes. An hour loops the lot.

Getting there
Coastal train from Colombo
The coast line runs normally: about 2.5 hrs from Colombo Fort. Sit on the right heading south for the sea view.
Southern Expressway by road
The E01 makes it under 2 hrs by car from Colombo, or about 2.5 hrs from the airport. Frequent expressway buses too.
Fort is walkable, town is not
Trains and buses arrive just outside the ramparts. Inside the fort you walk; outside it, take a tuk-tuk.

Best time to go
Dec-Mar is dry and bright. The southwest monsoon hits this coast hard May-Sep.
Cheapest months
May-Sep monsoon on the south coast, when fort guesthouses discount heavily.
Priciest & busiest
Christmas to mid-Jan, when the fort's small hotels book out entirely.

Morning
Coffee inside the fort, then the ramparts before the heat, anticlockwise from the main gate round to the lighthouse.
Late morning
The Dutch Reformed Church and the Maritime Archaeology Museum, a few minutes apart near Church Street.
Lunch
Something long and cold in a courtyard on Pedlar Street; the fort does cafes better than big restaurants.
Afternoon
Tuk-tuk to Jungle Beach at Rumassala for a swim, with the Japanese Peace Pagoda on the headland above.
Evening
Back for sunset on Flag Rock, then dinner inside the fort and a nightcap somewhere with a courtyard.
