The plan

Nine Arch Bridge
A 1921 colonial viaduct standing in the jungle, free to visit. Check posted train times and go early for the light.

Little Adam's Peak
The easy one: 45 minutes up through tea bushes to a ridge of three small peaks. Best at sunrise, before the groups.

Ella Rock
The harder hike: 3-4 hours return along the railway then up. Take water and ignore the men offering to guide you.

Ravana Falls and the cave
A roadside waterfall 6km down the Wellawaya road, biggest after rain. The cave above it is a steep add-on.

Tea factory tour
Halpewatte above Ella runs regular walk-throughs of withering, rolling and grading, ending in a tasting.

Getting there

Train from Nanu Oya
The Nanu Oya to Ella stretch reopened in July 2026 and is the most scenic part of the line. Reserve up to 30 days ahead.
The Kandy line is still broken
Cyclone Ditwah closed the track above Rambukkana in Nov 2025. Reach Nanu Oya or Ella by road until it reopens.
Road from the south coast
Around 3.5-4 hrs from Mirissa or Galle via Wellawaya, climbing hard at the end. Shared shuttles run it daily.

When to go

Best time to go
Jan-Mar and Jun-Sep. Ella sits leeward of the southwest monsoon, so summer stays usable.
Cheapest months
Oct-Dec, when the northeast monsoon parks cloud over the gap for days at a time.
Priciest & busiest
Dec-Mar peak season, plus Jul-Aug when the European crowd arrives.

If you've got one day

Morning
Up Little Adam's Peak for sunrise. Forty-five minutes through the tea bushes, and back down before breakfast.
Late morning
Walk the track to Nine Arch Bridge and wait out a train. Check posted times so you aren't standing for hours.
Lunch
Kottu or a rice and curry spread on Main Street, then coffee somewhere with a view down the gap.
Afternoon
Tea factory tour at Halpewatte, or the longer haul up Ella Rock if your legs are still working.
Evening
Beers and a very long menu at Cafe Chill, which runs to 2am and is the town's default meeting point.

Nearby & day trips

Lipton's Seat, Haputale
An hour west: the viewpoint where Thomas Lipton surveyed his estates. Walk up from Dambatenne factory at dawn.
Diyaluma Falls
Sri Lanka's second-highest waterfall, 40 min south. A rough hour's climb reaches the natural pools at the top.
