ON A BUDGET
San Sebastián is expensive to sleep in and cheap to eat standing up — pintxos cost a couple of euros each.
Gros, across the river
Hostels sit in Gros and at the edge of the Parte Vieja. Gros is quieter, next to Zurriola's surf beach and noticeably cheaper.
What a day costs
Dorm €28–45, higher in August. Pintxos at €2–4 each add up to €18–25 for a night's eating. Reckon €60–95 a day, roughly $65–105.
Getting around cheap
Dbus city buses cost under €2 and the Euskotren runs east towards the French border. The whole city crosses on foot in half an hour.
Free by day
La Concha and its promenade, the climb up Monte Urgull to the old castle, and the Peine del Viento sculptures at the western end of the bay.

The Parte Vieja's pintxo street, where the crawl itself is the social event; surfers gather on Zurriola at dawn instead.
