Granada is one of the last Spanish cities where ordering a drink gets you a plate of food at no extra cost, and the tapa tends to improve with each round at the same bar. You do not get to choose it, asking to swap it is not the custom, and three or four rounds genuinely replaces dinner.

A short pedestrian street off Plaza del Carmen that is almost wall-to-wall tapas bars, and the usual place to start because you can have one drink and move on without ceremony. Busy from around 9pm and standing room only at the good end.

Flamenco in three cave rooms at Camino del Sacromonte 9, running since 1972, with 10 to 12 performers and space for about 190 people. Reservations are taken daily from 6pm to midnight; the show with a drink starts at €28, with dinner from €60, and packages including transport from €65.

A concert hall and club at C/ Horno de Abad 11 that has been running since 1989, mixing touring gigs with DJ nights across rock, indie and electronic. It also runs an annual competition for emerging local bands, so the midweek line-ups are worth a look.

The Moroccan tea houses strung up the stepped street below the Albaicín, serving mint tea and pastries rather than alcohol and staying open late. Useful as the one late option in the centre where you can actually hear the person opposite you.
