A winter cycling capital with a November road race and no top-flight football of its own.
Nearest league football
No top-flight club here. Hércules play in Alicante, forty minutes down the TRAM, and Villarreal an hour and a half north; seasons run August to May.
Winter cycling season
European professional teams train on the Coll de Rates and the Guadalest road from January to March; hire shops in town rent decent road bikes by the day.
Benidorm half marathon
The Villa de Benidorm half and 10k take over the seafront in November, when it is still shorts weather and the hotels are cheap.
Kayak and dive the bay
Operators work out of the harbour and Poniente; the water around Isla de Benidorm is a marine reserve with reliable visibility from May onwards.
