ON A BUDGET
A castle on a rock, a marble promenade and cheap beds in the old town — Alicante is easy on a budget.
Aerial view of Alicante and its marina
Casco Antiguo
Hostels sit in the old quarter below Santa Bárbara castle and around the Mercado Central. Loud at weekends, five minutes from Postiguet beach.
What a day costs
Dorm €18–30, a menú del día €11–15, a tram ride under €2. A day comes in at €40–70, roughly $45–80.
Getting around cheap
TRAM lines run north to Benidorm and Dénia on a rechargeable card; the lift bored through the castle rock from Postiguet costs a couple of euros.
Free by day
Walking up to Santa Bárbara castle, the marble waves of the Explanada de España, and Postiguet beach — all free, all within a kilometre.
El Barrio plazas
Plaza Santa María and the surrounding lanes fill from about eleven at night; free walking tours meet outside the town hall in the mornings.
