The largest of the Joseon palaces, at the head of Gwanghwamun square, with a changing-of-the-guard ceremony in the outer courtyard. Entry is free if you arrive wearing hanbok, which is why rental shops ring the walls.

General admission is free, with charges only for special exhibitions. Open 10:00–18:00 most days and until 21:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays, last entry 30 minutes before closing; it is at Ichon station and needs three hours minimum.

Samsung Foundation museum in Hannam-dong showing Korean antiquities and contemporary art across buildings by three different architects. It shares a site and ticketing with the Hoam Museum outside the city, so check opening days before going.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's city branch, immediately east of Gyeongbokgung. Open 10:00–18:00, with late opening until 21:00 on Wednesdays and Saturdays; it pairs naturally with the palace in one day.

A granite national park inside the city's northern boundary, reachable by subway plus a short bus ride, with marked routes up to Baegundae. Very busy at weekends with well-equipped Korean hikers; wear proper shoes rather than trainers.
