Beaches, penguins and a cable car — one of the easiest big cities anywhere to travel with children.
Boulders Beach penguins
Boardwalks over a nesting colony at Simon's Town, with a sheltered swimming cove next door and a small entry fee. Ages 3+.
Two Oceans Aquarium
A kelp forest tank, a predator tank and a proper play area at the V&A Waterfront; two hours, and a sound wet-day plan. All ages.
Table Mountain cableway
Five minutes up, then flat paths across the top. The cars stop for wind, so go early and check before driving out. Ages 4+.
Kirstenbosch and the Boomslang
Lawns, a tree canopy walkway and a shallow stream to paddle in, under the back of the mountain; summer sunset concerts on Sundays. All ages.
Cold water and safe swims
The Atlantic side is genuinely cold — use the tidal pools at St James and Dalebrook, or the warmer False Bay beaches. Restaurants welcome children.
