An impossibly turquoise river running through the Julian Alps, with Slovenia's best whitewater and the sobering WWI front line above it.
Raft or kayak the Soca
The river's colour has to be seen. Standard rafting runs are grade II-III and suit total beginners; wetsuits are provided.
Kobarid Museum
An outstanding, unflinching museum of the Isonzo Front and the 1917 Caporetto breakthrough. Open daily year-round.
Great Soca Gorge
Near Bovec the river squeezes into a 750m slot barely two metres wide. A short marked walk gets you above it.
Boka Waterfall
Slovenia's tallest fall at 106m, visible from the roadside viewpoint or via a steep hour's climb to its base.
Kozjak Waterfall
A 15m fall dropping into a domed cavern near Kobarid, reached on an easy 30-minute walk from the Napoleon Bridge.
Bus from Ljubljana to Bovec
Direct coaches take 3.5-4 hours via Kranjska Gora or Idrija. Summer services over the Vrsic Pass are the scenic option.
Drive over Vrsic Pass
The classic approach: 50 cobbled hairpins from Kranjska Gora, open roughly May-October. Two hours from Bled but worth a full day.
From Italy via Trieste or Udine
Bovec is close to the Italian border. Trieste airport is about two hours by car; there is no direct public transport link.
