The plan

Postojna Cave
Europe's largest show cave. An electric train runs 3.7km underground, then a walking loop through the vast Concert Hall.
Predjama Castle
A 13th-century fortress built into a 123m cliff mouth, the largest cave castle in the world. Nine kilometres from Postojna.
Skocjan Caves
UNESCO-listed and the better cave: a footbridge crosses a 45m-deep river canyon underground. Fixed tour times, book online.
Vivarium and the olm
See the proteus, the blind pink cave salamander that lives a century and can fast for years. Included in combined cave tickets.
Karst wine and prsut
The red soil around Divaca and Stanjel produces Teran wine and air-dried Karst ham. Cellar visits need booking ahead.

Getting there

Bus or train from Ljubljana
Postojna is 46km from the capital. Frequent buses take about an hour; trains take a similar time to Postojna station.
On the Ljubljana-coast route
It sits directly on the road and rail line to Piran and Koper, making it a natural stop between capital and coast.
Day trip from Trieste or Venice
Trieste is about an hour by car. Organised day tours run from both cities, but staying a night lets you see both cave systems.

When to go

Best time to go
May-June and September: warm outside, and the caves are never crowded
Cheapest months
November-March, though Skocjan runs a reduced winter tour schedule
Priciest & busiest
July-August, when cave tours sell out days ahead online

If you've got one day

Morning
First Postojna Cave tour of the day. Bring a jacket: it is 10C underground year-round, whatever August is doing outside.
Late morning
Shuttle or drive nine kilometres to Predjama Castle and the tunnels running up behind the cliff face.
Lunch
Back into Postojna town for a proper Slovene lunch, or eat at the cave park's own restaurant if you are pressed.
Afternoon
Drive 30 minutes to Skocjan Caves for the afternoon tour. The underground canyon is the real showstopper here.
Evening
Detour to Stanjel or a Karst village for Teran wine and prsut before heading on to the coast or the capital.

Nearby & day trips

Lake Cerknica
Europe's largest intermittent lake, 20km away: a full lake in spring, a dry meadow by late summer, then water again.
Lipica Stud Farm
The 1580 home of the Lipizzaner horse, 40 minutes south near Sezana. Stable tours and training demonstrations run daily.
