Tartini Square
The oval marble heart of town, a filled-in medieval harbour ringed by Venetian palaces. Free, and best just after dawn.
St George's bell tower
Climb the wooden stairs of the 1608 campanile, modelled on San Marco's, for the full sweep of red roofs and Adriatic.

Seven surviving 16th-century towers on the ridge above town. The best view in Piran for a couple of euros.

Sergej Masera Maritime Museum
Housed in a waterfront palace, covering Piran's salt, shipping and fishing history plus a good model collection.

Secovlje Salina Nature Park
Working medieval salt pans 20 minutes south, still harvested by hand. A birdwatchers' wetland and a saltworks museum.

Getting there
Bus from Ljubljana
Direct coaches take 2.5-3 hours to Piran bus station just outside the walls. The old town itself is closed to traffic.
Fly Trieste or Venice
Trieste airport is about 90 minutes by road, Venice roughly three hours. Both are usually cheaper to reach than Ljubljana.
Ferry or bus from Croatia and Italy
Seasonal catamarans link Piran with Venice and Trieste, and buses run frequently down the Istrian coast to Rovinj and Pula.

June and September: warm sea, long evenings, no August wall of bodies

November-March, when the town is beautiful, empty and half shut

Morning
Coffee on Tartini Square before the day-trippers, then wander the lanes up towards the cathedral.
Late morning
Climb St George's bell tower, then walk the medieval town walls along the ridge for the wider panorama.
Lunch
Fried Adriatic seafood in a paper cone from Fritolin pri Cantini, eaten standing on the little square behind the market.
Afternoon
Swim off the concrete platforms at Punta, or take the bus to the Secovlje salt pans and their mud spa.
Evening
Sunset at the lighthouse point, dinner on the waterfront, then bars around Tartini Square until well after midnight.
Nearby & day trips
Portoroz
The resort strip 10 minutes away: sandy beach, casinos, thalasso spas and Piran's actual late-night clubs and beach bars.
Izola and Koper
A fishing town with a good food scene and a Venetian port city, both 20-40 minutes up the coast by frequent bus.
