Plecnik's riverside walk
Triple Bridge, Cobblers' Bridge, the market colonnade and the National Library: one architect quietly redesigned an entire capital.
Central Market and Open Kitchen
Plecnik's arcade market daily. On Fridays from spring to autumn it becomes Odprta Kuhna, an open-air kitchen of city chefs.

Metelkova Mesto by daylight
A former army barracks turned squat-art village. Go by day for the mosaics and sculpture, then come back after 22:00 for the noise.

The city's green lung, with the Jakopic Promenade's giant outdoor photo shows and an easy woodland climb up Roznik hill.
Getting there
Fly Ljubljana (LJU)
Joze Pucnik airport is 26km north. Bus 28 runs to the centre for a few euros; airport shuttles and taxis take about 30 minutes.
Fly Venice, Trieste or Zagreb
Often far cheaper than LJU. Direct GoOpti and FlixBus shuttles run from all three, taking roughly 2-4 hours to Ljubljana.
Train or bus from neighbours
Direct trains from Vienna, Zagreb and Villach; FlixBus from Munich, Budapest and Trieste. The bus and train stations sit side by side.

May-June and September: warm, green, and the terraces are full but not mobbed

If you've got one day
Morning
Coffee on the Ljubljanica, then the Central Market and Dragon Bridge before the tour groups land around ten.
Late morning
Funicular up to Ljubljana Castle for the tower view over red roofs to the snow line of the Kamnik Alps.
Lunch
Walk down to Trubarjeva cesta for cheap Balkan grills and burek, or a sit-down lunch on Novi trg by the river.
Afternoon
Plecnik House in Trnovo, then loop back through Krizanke and the National Gallery, or laze in Tivoli Park.
Evening
Aperitif on a river terrace, dinner in the old town, then Metelkova for concerts and cheap beer until sunrise.
Nearby & day trips
Lake Bled
Slovenia's postcard lake is 55 minutes by direct bus or train. Very doable as a long day trip, better as an overnight.
Skofja Loka and Kamnik
Two intact medieval towns within 45 minutes by train or bus, and almost entirely free of coach tourism.
