Lake Bohinj

Bled's wilder, bigger, emptier sibling, sitting entirely inside Triglav National Park. Fewer coaches, colder water and proper mountains at the far end.
The plan
Vogel cable car
Rises from Ukanc to 1,535m in four minutes for the classic view straight down the lake to Triglav. Runs roughly 8:00-18:00.

Savica Waterfall
A 78m A-shaped fall at the head of the valley, reached by 500-odd steps. The Sava Bohinjka river starts here.

Mostnica Gorge
From Stara Fuzina, a shallow gorge of sculpted pools including the famous elephant-shaped rock. Flat, easy and free of crowds.

Church of St John the Baptist
The stone bridge and 13th-century frescoed church at Ribcev Laz are the image of Bohinj. Interior opening hours are limited.

Swim the lake
Bohinj is 4km long and colder than Bled, but the shallow eastern end warms to about 22C in August. Free shore access.
Getting there
Bus from Ljubljana via Bled
Direct coaches run to Bohinjska Bistrica and on to Ribcev Laz at the lake, taking about two hours in total.
Train to Bohinjska Bistrica
The scenic Bohinj railway from Jesenice or Nova Gorica, including a car-train through the tunnel, then a short bus to the lake.
Bus or drive from Bled
Only 30 minutes by regular bus or car. Note that summer parking at Ribcev Laz and Ukanc fills by mid-morning.

If you've got one day
Morning
Drive or bus to Ukanc for the first Vogel cable car up, before cloud builds over the Julian Alps ridgeline.
Late morning
Walk the ridge trails at 1,500m, then take in Triglav from the Orlove Glave viewpoint before descending.
Lunch
Eat on the mountain at the Merjasec alpine hut, or drop back down for lake trout at a Ribcev Laz inn.
Afternoon
Savica Waterfall's stepped climb, or the gentler Mostnica Gorge walk from Stara Fuzina if legs are done.
Evening
Swim off the stone bridge at Ribcev Laz, then dinner and a beer in Bohinjska Bistrica. Everything shuts early.

Triglav ascent from Bohinj
Slovenia's 2,864m national symbol is a serious two-day hut trek from here. Guides are strongly recommended for non-alpinists.
Soca Valley over Vrsic
Bovec is about two hours by road via Kranjska Gora and the Vrsic Pass, one of the best drives in the Alps.
